Short Response

Short Response

Introduction

Understanding how to compose a high quality short response to demonstrate your evaluation of a reading passage will be important for your academic success at middle school, in high school, and when you attend college.  The ability to master this language arts skill should be important to you because it is a commonly used high school and college reading activity.  Short response items will encourage you to interact with an assigned text.  You will use this format to respond to many questions in class this year.

 Instructions

  1. Stop, when directed, and respond to the assigned question.
  2. Carefully read and consider the question.
  3. Clearly restate the question and provide a brief but relevant answer to it in your topic sentence.
  4. Support the response you provided in the topic sentence with a minimum of two separate details from the text in two different sentences.(These details should support the response provided in the topic sentence and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the text.)
  5. Provide a concluding statement to provide closure (summarize and/or explain what you learned).
  6. Use good conventions (punctuation, capitalization, spelling, sentence structure).
