Independent Reading Unit (Acclerated Reader)

Independent Reading (Accelerated Reader)

Introduction

I designed this unit to meet a Wyoming reading standards.  The message from educational research is clear in regards to independent reading—students are to be given substantial quantities of time to read a wide range of fiction and nonfiction materials while in school. To become college and career ready, students must grapple with works of exceptional craft and thought.  Through wide and deep reading of literature and literary nonfiction of steadily increasing sophistication, students will gain a reservoir of literary and cultural knowledge, references, and images; the ability to evaluate intricate arguments; and the capacity to surmount the challenges posed by complex texts.

Unit Goal

•Students will read and comprehend independently and proficiently complex literary and informational texts whose range extends across genres, cultures, and centuries.

Overview

To meet the intent of this goal, I will assign you books to read, not points.  Approximately every three weeks, I will assess your completion of assigned readings.  Educational experts advise students to read books that they can comprehend at 95% accuracy.  They also recommend that students read books at a developmentally appropriate level.  (You are required to read novels between the 5th and 9th grade reading levels and nonfiction texts between the 4th and 8thgrade reading levels.)

I will award credit according to your Accelerated Reader test scores, reading within the suggested range, and completion of assigned reading goals by the end of each quarter. For students who cannot pass Accelerated Reader tests or who wish to read a book not from our library’s Accelerated Reader collection, an alternative assignment can be completed upon request and approval from me.  This assignment will be repeated each quarter.
